Maria Grasso bought the winning ticket at a Star Market in Boston
BRAINTREE, Massachusetts -- A 54-year old Chilean immigrant and live-in baby sitter came forward Wednesday to claim the $197 million Big Game jackpot, the largest individual lottery prize in U.S. history.
Maria Grasso was born in Chile and came to Boston in 1996. She works for Chris Gabrieli, a millionaire venture capitalist who made an unsuccessful bid for Congress last year. One of six siblings, her family still lives in Chile.
The prize, claimed by Grasso alone, makes it the largest ever won by an individual in the United States, according to lottery officials. The country's biggest jackpot was won by a group of 13 Ohio machinists who pooled their ticket purchases and split a $295 million Powerball jackpot in July.
The winning Big Game ticket was sold April 6 at a Star Market in Boston near Fenway Park.
Wednesday's announcement finally put to rest rumors that the winner was a Nigerian immigrant cab driver.
The rumor mill started with Town Taxi, where drivers were reporting that cabbie Patrick Okusanya had won the huge jackpot. The speculation was further fueled when the driver didn't return to work after the Tuesday drawing.
Okusanya sought the help of an attorney to deny he was the winner.
You could soon be rolling in the dough. . . like Maria Graso who recently walked away with a whopping $197 million lottery fortune.
The 54-year-old Chilea native now has more money than the Boston millionaire whose four kids she raised as their live-in babysitter.
Maria, a divorced mother of two, has taken the Big Game option of walking away with a cool $70.2 million lump sum after taxes - instead of more money spread over 26 annual payments.
The jackpot is the biggest lottery prize ever won by an individual.
The newly rich former nanny isn't ready for retirement.
"I've worked hard all my life," Maria says.
"This has been my priority to work with children...this will be a chance for me to keep helping."
